An Employee’s Perspective of Quilt Market: Cheryl Martel

I've wanted to go to quilt market for a long time.  I've been associated with several quilt shops working and teaching over the years; and every time the owners came back from market with new stuff and talked about their experience, I was green with envy.

Well, Cyndi gave Mary and me an opportunity to attend the Spring market in Pittsburgh.   All I can say is, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!  It was awesome, amazing, overwhelming, exhausting, and an unbelievable blast.

It amazed me that there are so many talented people in the quilting world.   It isn't just about the fabric. We didn't really focus on that.   What we did focus on was new and exciting patterns and projects for our customers.

Cyndi had a plan.  We started a Row 100 and went down one side, focusing on the vendors only on that side.  When we got to the end of that row,  we headed back up on the opposite side. We didn't miss a single vendor.  Even when we went for lunch we had to remember where we left off and start back in the right spot.

We ran in to people we knew (Cyndi and Mary knew more people than I did).   We even ran in to our own Kathryn Leblanc.  That was a hoot.  And people we know just from buying their patterns and getting catalogs.   I had my picture taken with Nancy Zieman.

Quilting FAQs:Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying a Sewing Machine 2

Click here to see Part One: Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying a Sewing Machine

Get the best machine you can afford and one that you can grow in to.   When setting a budget for your sewing machine, being realistic about your sewing expectations is essential. If you are an infrequent sewer now, a new, top of the line machine that requires more learning time is not necessarily going to make you sew more. A solid mechanical machine that covers all the basics and only requires threading and plugging but also has some of the new features might be a better choice and will seem less daunting.

Quilting FAQs:Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying a Sewing Machine 1

If you are a sewer or quilter, buying a sewing machine can be one of the most important decisions you can make.  Not only can this be a huge economic decision (prices can range from a couple hundred dollars to over $13,000), but it is also an emotional decision since it can so greatly affect your sense of well-being and how you feel about sewing.   I don’t know about you, but sewing/quilting is like therapy for me.  A great stress reliever – except when I’m making those dreaded Halloween costumes up until 4 p.m. on October 31!  To help quilters with this decision, I've put together a list of one of the common quilting FAQ's, the top 5 things to think about when buying a sewing machine, in a two-part article.

Quilting FAQs: "Can I Please Use My Sewing Machine?"

Posted by Cyndi Rich

I have been a quilter for about 20 years now.  Over the course of those years, I have probably made about 200 quilts.  I remember back to my very first quilt that I made.  It was actually a table runner, and it is currently displayed on my coffee table in my family room.  Although the edges are frayed at this point from the multiple washings and just overall use, I still love having it there as a symbol of my journey of becoming a quilter.

The first week of November marked the 25th anniversary of A Quilters Gathering in Manchester, New Hampshire.  This large regional quilt show is sponsored by the Eastcoast Quilters Alliance, a group that was started by Jeanne Glenfield and  Marie Geary in 1989 and is dedicated to providing quilters the opportunity of learning in an atmosphere of warmth and friendship with all the comforts of a warm quilt.  The original founders have since passed the baton to Jeanne’s daughters Kate Sussman and Sarah Glenfield
